We found them in low grass near the foot of the high limestone cliff climbing-wall at the entrance to the reserve and close to the upper winding drum house at the centre of the reserve on a grassy old stone tip. This Lady’s Bedstraw (Galium verum) is about to pop out in flower and is found in the upper half of the reserve. Small Scabious (Scabiosa columbaria) can also be found on the upper slopes where the soils are deeper over the limestone scree. They cover the quarry floor in the central quarry area close to the cliff face. Black bryony is a climbing hedgerow and woodland edge plant that flowers between May and August. The large, fleshy root is black on the outside and exceedingly acrid, and, although an old cathartic medicine, is a most dangerous remedy when taken internally. I’m not too sure which Sedum this is, but it is probably White Stonecrop (Sedum album) which likes dry rocky places like this quarry floor.

This small erect stem with bell-like green flowers had me confused for a while until I realized it was a horizontally scrambling Black Bryony (Tamus communis). This Harebell (Campanula rotundifolia) lay amongst the screes and ferns on the upper slopes of the quarry. Only a very limited number of Black Bryony fairies are available for sale. Here is the amazing landscape of one of the curled up flower heads from the top…. Given the limestone cliff habitat it is most likely to be Bloody Cranesbill (Geranium sanguineum). Just before you head out of the reserve and onto the golf course at the top of the hill a small footpath leads off to the right up a steep scree slope. As you can see in the photo below there were masses of Eyebright (Euphrasia spp.)
There were none in other areas of short turf across the reserve and we were shocked at just how small and vulnerable they are, being located very close to one of the main rock climbing walls where there is a lot of footfall. Walking back down to the main path I noticed this Hummingbird Hawkmoth (Macroglossum stellatarum) collecting nectar from the Red Valerian. Further up into the centre of the reserve on the more open sunny tips there are plenty of Yellow-wort (Blackstonia perfoliata) flowers on display…, Wild Thyme (Thymus polytrichus) was common in the usual form of spreading mats, but occasional individual plants could be found…. Black bryony tuber was certainly used as a stapple thousands years ago, after a detox procedure comparable to some others tubers like yam or cassava varieties that are also still used as stapples, yet some are deadly without preparation. Willowherb was just starting to flower in profusion.
