Because while those Bondian vibes were back in full-force tonight - Pine gambling at a casino and even ordering a vodka martini - Burr is a refreshing antithesis of 007; a woman with a husband and (soon) a child, straightforward and uncomplicated, refusing even to carry a gun with the brilliant retort, "Don't be silly – I'm English".
The tension is relentless. A discredited Burr makes one last stand. It's an ending significantly different from John Le Carré's original, swapping a bleak, ambiguous denouement - in which Pine and Jed escape unscathed, but so does Roper – for a more traditionally optimistic one. Plucky enforcement officer Burr (Olivia Colman) is finally able to slap the cuffs on Roper. Pine risks it all to put his plan in motion. His actions draw him into the world of Richard Roper, a businessman and arms dealer. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. But it is a fairly intelligent presentation that requires a little attention on the part of the viewer. Extraneous characters (easy to use in a novel) have been combined - and it works well. It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness.
But my favorite supporting characters are the British spy handler, Angela Burr (played by Oliva Coleman) and Laurie's best pal and security SOB "Corky" played by Tom Hollander. If you like spy/action then you will LOVE this film - as long as you understand it is an English film, which means the drama builds a little more slowly than typical American films and relies more on plot and characters than it does on explosions. Pine gets his happy ending, while Roper gets his comeuppance - so where can a sequel go? Highly recommended.
