John Cavanagh is a former presenter of The Rock Show on BBC Radio One. I searched the internet until I found this book and I loved it all over again. This year marks 50 years since Pink Floyd's first psychedelic masterpiece, "Piper at the Gates of Dawn." There are no discussion topics on this book yet.
Just like that strange and whimsical album, before Pink Floyd became epic and heavy and humourless and that almost perfect balance of experimental and popular. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon.
This is a lovely little book about the making of the album and the band at the time. This, instead, is a celebration of a moment when everything seemed possible, when creative worlds and forces converged, when an album spoke with an entirely new voice. It mainly talks about the "scene" which most people would know from a million other sources, and about the engineers and producers of the record which was interesting, but not interesting enough to make up for everything else that was missing.

The structure is a little chaotic - Cavanagh skips the formation of the band entirely and jumps straight to the recording of the album, interspersed freely with interesting anecdotes from the Swinging London scene at the time.

Be the first to ask a question about Pink Floyd's The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Through a series of interviews with a wide range of people connected to Pink Floyd in their earliest days (including Nick Mason, Peter Jenner, Jenny Fabian, Storm Thorgerson, Duggie Fields and Peter Whitehead), John Cavanagh paints a vivid picture of how this remarkable debut album was created. He wasn't an otherworldly genius, or just a crazy person who took lots of drugs. A great retrospective on Pink Floyd's first album. I learned a lot about the intersection of the counter-culture and the British recording industry. My favorite of the 33 1/3 book series.
Uh-oh, it looks like your Internet Explorer is out of date. Find all the books, read about the author, and more. John Cavanagh gives us a brief, but solid, overview of the making of this landmark psychedelic album. The Masqueraders had been around since the early '60s, releasing singles for labels such as A little difficult to find a copy, but its worth it to do so. they were compromising their raw, rootsy power with trendy emulations of the Beatles, Kinks, Dylan, and psychedelic music. In doing so, Cavanagh also gives credit to Nick Mason, Roger Waters, Rick Wright, and their team of managers, producers, photographers, scene-makers, friends, and fellow travelers - all of whom contributed to the making of a truly original, fun, and occasionally haunting album. I have the "Heavenly Horse" book and the imagery and poetry of Mary Stanton's original story carries over into this one. The title of Pink Floyd's debut album is taken from a chapter in Syd Barrett's favorite children's book, The Wind in the Willows, and the lyrical imagery of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is indeed full of colorful, childlike, distinctly British whimsy, albeit filtered through the perceptive lens of LSD. The sequel to Mary Stanton's first novel, "The Heavenly Horse from the Outermost West", this novel continues the story of the desperate struggle for survival of the sacred Appaloosa breed of horses against impossible odds. My first meeting with the 33 1/3 series was Low and it set high standards that Piper at the Gates of Dawn just doesn't live up to.
collections of singles that one can find. I also gained a better, more even-handed understanding of Syd Barrett's talents. This is not the tragic 'Syd' story, but the optimistic prequel at a time when everything still seemed possible. A great little book this, and very readable if you are interested in Syd Barrett and the early Pink Floyd. He brings to life the stories behind each track, as well as Pink Floyd's ground. He brings to life the stories behind each track, as well as Pink Floyd's groundbreaking live performances of the time. Black Sabbath's Master of Reality (33 1/3), The Kinks' The Village Green Preservation Society (Thirty Three and a Third series), Jimi Hendrix's Electric Ladyland (Thirty Three and a Third series), Velvet Underground's The Velvet Underground and Nico (Thirty Three and a Third series), The Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique (33 1/3), "…short, but intense…Piper at the Gates of Dawn is packed with interviews…and with great stories."" Those were elements of his persona, but more importantly, he was a gentle, talented middle class boy barely out of his teens. Sadly, producer of "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" Norman (Hurricane) Smith doesn't want to talk about The Floyd anymore. Essentially, London 1966-1967 is a collection of the music used for director Peter Whitehead's film

was thrown together from a variety of singles, British LP tracks, outtakes, and a cut from an early 1964 U.K. EP.
Cavanagh even tracks down the photographer who took the photograph on the album sleeve, and amusingly there is a photo of the author on the back of this book, using the same type of lens. now to listen to the record FOR THE FIRST TIME! Some of these items ship sooner than the others.
